Advertising Built for the Coding Terminal

Nic Baird

Innovation in AI isn't only happening at the frontier labs. Some of the fastest-moving products right now are coding agents, and developers are handing more and more of their work to them.

The economics are unlike the developer tools that came before. A free user of a traditional SaaS product costs almost nothing to serve. A free user of a coding agent costs money on every task it runs. Monetization has to be part of the plan early, not bolted on once the bill arrives.

Dead Time in the Terminal

Every developer using a coding agent knows the experience: you give it a task, hit enter and wait while it generates code, runs tests or works through the next step. That waiting period is dead time, and it's the one moment a developer is sitting still inside their own workflow.

Koah's coding-agent format is built for it. Ads appear during agent execution and are designed for the command line rather than adapted from display. They're interactive too, so developers respond with keyboard controls without leaving the terminal.

For coding-agent companies, that turns the free tier into a revenue line instead of a pure cost center, and gives them room to keep it generous while they compete for adoption.

Developers Are the Hardest Audience to Reach

Ask anyone marketing a developer tool where the budget goes and the list is long: conferences, podcast reads, newsletter placements, documentation SEO, swag, a developer relations team. Each channel works a little, and none of them reach a developer at the moment they're choosing what to build on.

Developers are also the audience most practiced at ignoring advertising. What makes the terminal different is timing. A developer watching an agent run is already thinking about their stack, which is exactly when a monitoring tool, a cloud platform or an API company wants to reach them. Matching runs on user, context and memory at the moment of inference, not on cookies or third-party profiles.

"The next generation of advertising won't look like the last one," said Nic Baird, our CEO and co-founder. "It will be built into the environments where people are already engaging, creating value for the developers building them and the advertisers trying to reach their audiences."

Three Sets of Needs

Getting that right means more than creating more inventory. Every format has to work for three parties at once: the user, who should find the product as good as it was before the ad existed; the publisher, who needs revenue to keep serving free users; and the advertiser, who needs performance that justifies the spend. A format that only works for one of them doesn't last.

It's also why publishers build things with us that don't exist yet. We're an AI company, and so are the companies we work with. They're trusting us with their user experience and with new ideas to help grow their business and revenue in a healthy, sustainable way.
